Oscar-winning director Jane Campion (
"The Piano," "Bright Star") returns to her roots with the leading character of her new project. The feminist and master of auteur films captivates the audience with a strong mix of her favorite ingredients - a thriller, psychological drama, terrific landscape of Moke Lake, New Zealand and A-list actors.
The plot reveals the details of investigation into the disappearance of twelve-year-old girl named Tui from the town, lost among the picturesque mountains on the shore of the lake. Young Australian detective Robin Griffin investigates the case. Her own painful memories are associated with this place.
Wonderful area is a paradise of crime and male chauvinism. Poor girl Tui is the daughter of Matt Mitcham, the local drug lord and head of the clan of thugs. It seems that very few people were surprised when it turned out that the girl was in her fifth month of pregnancy.
This land of rough men living by their own rules and patient, submissive women just needs a lady's revolution. A messenger of change - mysterious white-haired charismatic GJ founds a strange colony of disappointed women right by the lake. And Robin is unable to cope with her own past and more and more looks like an angel of vengeance.
Through the search of Tui, through the clash of GJ's camp and clan of Mitcham, through Robin's struggle with her demons the viewer witnesses the parade of the most incredible characters and types, the most unexpected plot twists.
And it's unlikely that the head of the police station, Detective Sergeant Al Parker, had expected, when he took under the protection of his young colleague, that he would soon be cathetus in a love triangle in addition to the questionable chances of reciprocity and more questionable competition.
Robin "must lose herself in order to find the missing girl", Mrs Campion pointedly reported before filming. How does it relate to the red-haired, blue-eyed, seductive man, who is able to play a prince and a homeless and very fiend? The director kept silence intriguingly.
