Unfortunately, Australia has a few not very pleasant records such as the world's highest level of salinity of soil and water. Ecologists of Australia have announced this issue the most important threat of the 21 century, and ABC didn't stint to make the scientific educational TV-series.
In fact, "The Silent Flood" is a training video, addressed schoolchildren and students, and it is endowed with all the advantages of an educational aid.
It's thorough, informative and methodical and it's designed to ensure that the rising generation will firmly learn the lessons.
The TV-series covers all aspects of the problem: its history, its essence, the impact on the landscape and economy, features of its research and prospects of its solving. Four episodes - "The Story", " The Land", "The Water" and "The Future" - develop according to this structure.
It is hard to say exactly what kind of purpose the filmmakers has pursued, offering the role of the Narrator to the man recently recognized as "the sexiest Australian man alive", but to enhance the effect, they has decided not to confine themselves to the voice of the actor, and put him in front of the camera at least for one minute.
It can hardly be doubted that the young schoolgirls are open-mouthed while watching this film during their lessons. Though the question of how well they master the subject may still be challenged!
In any case it's known that the TV-series aired on Australian TV in December 2002 has broken all records among the documentaries. Australians are keenly interested in their environmental problems.
